Breeding

The Midlantic region offers many opportunities for the Thoroughbred breeder whether one breeds for racing or the sales. Stallion stations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia are within a few hours, so mares can be bred and returned to Charlton in the same day.

In 2005 a 96% conception rate was achieved through a program of daily teasing and appropriate veterinary examinations. Aggressive post-partum mare care assures that mares are suitable for mating on the earliest possible day. Open mares are placed under lights on December 1st to optimize cycling and breeding.
